This Time Last Year

Niagara Falls

It’s amazing how much can happen in the span of a year. Thanksgiving got me reflecting on all the things that have happened since last year when husband and I spent the holiday road tripping through upstate New York and celebrating Thanksgiving dinner in Niagara Falls.

It was so beautiful and an incredible reminder of the power and majesty of nature. (As well as being a prime example of what happens when natural wonders are not completely preserved and the surrounding area turns into something merely set up to sell merchandise.)

I remember feeling so grateful that I got to see those magnificent falls. We spent most of the day just staring at them – the sight and sound of all that water never getting old. We took a tour of the caves behind the falls and got drenched as we stood out on the viewing platform. It was perfect.

We had a lovely Thanksgiving dinner in the Sheraton hotel where we were staying, at a restaurant called Windows. Since we stayed on the Canadian side of the falls, they weren’t celebrating Thanksgiving, but our waiter still made it special for us.

I didn’t know then that in just a few months we’d move to New York. I didn’t know then that my love of nature was about to increase ten-fold. But thinking back, I can recall the sense of wonder and love I felt as I looked out onto the falls. Upstate New York and Niagara were beautiful and I was charmed by all of it.
